ATMs are a convenient way to handle transactions, but they also pose security risks if not used cautiously. This article provides essential tips on maintaining ATM safety, especially when it comes to protecting personal identification numbers (PINs) and other sensitive information.
Choose ATMs in well-lit, public areas, preferably inside a branch or busy location. Avoid machines in secluded or poorly lit areas, as they are more susceptible to tampering. When using an ATM, be aware of your surroundings and don’t be afraid to report anything suspicious.
Always shield the keypad with your hand or body when entering your PIN. Shoulder surfing — where someone tries to peek at your PIN from over your shoulder — is a common tactic used by thieves. As a general rule, always make sure no one is standing too close to you at the ATM. If you feel someone is, you can ask them politely to give you more space or cancel your transaction and go to another machine. This rule applies to both people; make sure you aren’t standing too close to someone using the ATM to respect their privacy.
Keep an eye on your statements for any unauthorized transactions. Early detection of fraud can prevent further financial damage. Frequently check your bank statements or view your transactions online. Another way to make sure you’re aware of any unauthorized transactions is to set up either text, email or push notifications to be sent to you anytime a transaction is completed using your account.
Skimmers are devices attached to ATMs to steal card information. Look out for any odd attachments or devices on the ATM. If something feels off about the card reader and PIN pad, don’t be afraid to call the police or the contact number on the ATM to report a possible skimming device. Avoid using that machine until the issue is resolved. Before using an ATM, inspect it for any unfamiliar components attached to the card slot or keypad. You can do this by attempting to wiggle or move the card reader and PIN pad, or by visually inspecting the machine for parts that are bulkier than they should be.
ATM safety is crucial to safeguarding your financial information. By choosing secure locations, shielding your PIN, monitoring bank statements and being alert for skimmers, you can use ATMs with greater confidence and security.
