If you’re about to graduate or start your career, you’ve probably heard people talk about how AI is changing everything. Here’s what they might not be telling you: AI is already replacing entry-level jobs, which are the kinds of roles students often rely on to get their foot in the door.

So, what does that mean for you? And what can you do to stay competitive in today’s job market? Let’s break it down.

What’s Happening

Recent analysis shows that there are around 33% fewer entry-level positions being posted, which is a dramatic drop compared to last year. Many companies now rely on AI to handle roles once meant for new graduates, like research, basic coding and administrative duties.

What You Can Do

1. Learn to use AI (don’t ignore it): Tools like ChatGPT or Grammarly aren’t just for fun, they’re a part of the modern workplace. If you can show employers you know how to work with AI, that makes you more valuable.

2. Focus on skills AI can’t replace: AI is smart, but it can’t replace soft skills. Build your strengths in areas like communication, teamwork, creativity and problem-solving.

3. Look for short-term, real experience: If you can’t land a full-time internship, try a micro-internship or short-term project. Websites like Extern.com could help you build real-world experience you can put on your resume.

4. Be open to different career paths: Some grads are exploring careers in skilled trades, tech repair or energy. These types of jobs are harder to automate, so they’re in high demand. They often pay well and don’t require a traditional office job.

AI isn’t going anywhere, but neither are you! AI may be able to craft an email, but it can’t replace your ideas, empathy or drive. By staying curious, learning how to use new tools, and focusing on the skills that make you uniquely human, you can shape a career that’s both resilient and rewarding.
