Bitcoin: Currency of the Future or Fleeting Fantasy

In 2021, cryptocurrency had a tumultuous year. Bitcoin specifically saw a record high cut in half within two months. This left many investors questioning if bitcoin is the futuristic currency many crypto bulls had predicted it to be. In this article, we’ll examine the pros and cons — and the possible future — of bitcoin as a cryptocurrency.

Pros
Cons

Bitcoin also has been tagged as bad for the environment. Some believe that mining and maintaining the bitcoin network is bad for the environment because of the massive power draw caused by the computers managing blockchains. However, the counterpoint to that argument is that bitcoin may actually be more efficient than fiat currency. If you think about the gross impact of powering bitcoin versus the impact of mining, logging, and the creation and transportation of metal coins and paper currency, it creates a real case for which is the lesser of two evils. More research is needed to quantify whether this is accurate.

In conclusion, there are real advantages to a crypto currency like bitcoin. However, there are large obstacles in its path to becoming a true currency. To overcome some of those obstacles, bitcoin may have to deviate from its founding document. As it sits right now, bitcoin may be more of a speculative investment for most people — and a risky one at that. This is not investment advice, just the opinion of one writer.
